Mexicali lies to the north of Mexico, bordering Calexico in California, USA. It is the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California, and its name is derived from the combination of Mexico and the state of California in the USA. Located in the desert, the city is known as the “Oriental Pearl of the Mexican Desert” or the “Desert Oasis.”
Mexicali is one of the cities in Mexico with a relatively high standard of living, having developed into a global city and international center in the desert. It is an important tourist destination in Mexico with complete tourism facilities, including bars, restaurants, hotels, inns, clubs, as well as numerous shops and stalls selling Mexican handicrafts and souvenirs. As a border city, Mexicali is similar to Tijuana, attracting many Americans, especially those from California, to come and enjoy their weekends by walking or driving across for shopping and leisure.
